COMPACT CITY TOUR

(Eyup  and Its Mosque)

The tour's contents:
Kariye Museum, Eyup Mosque, Cafe Pierre Loti, Ayvansaray, Balat, Fener, Galata Kulesi, Taksim, Ortakoy Mosque, Bosphorus Bridge, Beylerbeyi Palace, Camlica Hill.

Descriptions of the sites cited above:

Kariye Museum: Kariye Mosque attracts much attention because of its rich mosaics and frescoes. The art of painting in frescoes and mosaics were the indications of a new Byzantine art movement which was parallel to Italian Renaissance started by Giotto (1266-1337). Inside you can see beautiful mosaics representing events in the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The frescos relate to death and resurrection. Today the church is a museum, no religious services take place.

Eyup  and Its Mosque:Eyup is one of the areas founded outside the ramparts, after Istanbul's conquest by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. It is named after the prophet Muhamed's flag bearer, the first person who accepted him in his house after the migration from Mekke to Medine. He is thought to be killed in the exact same area, at Eyup, during a war. Eyup, after Mekke, Medine and Jerusalem, is accepted as the 4th most important religious place to visit for musulmans. The area is also has a famous mosque.

Cafe Pierre Loti: Nostalgia at French writer Pierre Loti's (1850-1923) favorite cafe in Eyup... Cafe Pierre Loti is named after the famous 'turc lover' frenchman whose real name is Julien Viaud. During his stay in Turkey, the writer loved
wearing a 'fes' ( Turkish hat ) and walking around with prayer beads just like a Turkish man would back then.He came frequently to this cafe which has a gorgeous view over the Golden Horn, to remember his memories and to write some books. We don't know the exact process but since then, this area is called Pierre Loti.

Ayvansaray & Balat & Fener: One of the Istanbul's oldest districts, Balat was mostly populated by Spanish Jewishs in the 15th-18th centuries. Except them, Greeks, Armenians and Turks resided there, so the 4 cultural groups created an authentic and
diversified area. Ayvansaray is situated where the ramparts of the sea meets the ramparts of the land, descending to the ruins of the palace of the Hebdomon on the city wall. It has a beautiful Greek sacred fountain with a garden called the Vlaherne Ayazmasi. Fener ( Phanarion ) is situated over one of the seven hills of Istanbul and is constitued of several steep ascents. In 1600s the Greek Patriarchate moved to this area, that's why it was populated by Greeks during centuries.

Galata Tower: Long before the Genoese built Galata Tower, the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius 1 had built a wooden tower on exactly the same spot. He knew this was a superb location for a watchtower, overlooking both the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. During the Ottoman period, Galata was also the official fire watchtower. Standing on the top-floor round
balcony, with stunning views of Topkapi Palace, both the Galata and Ataturk Bridges, the Golden Horn, the great Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosques.

Taksim: Taksim can be considered as the center of the city, and Taksim Square, the center of the center. The word Taksim comes from its historical background: This place was where Istanbul's main water pipe was divided into many small branches. lots of good restaurants and hotels are situated around the square, the historic tramway passes from there and there is a statue showing
Ataturk and some other nationalists symbolizing the Republic. At north, is situated one of the most famous streets of Istanbul, the Istiklal (Independence) Street where one can find lots of cafes where intellectuals meet.

Ortakoy Mosque: Ortakoy Mosque was built in 1854. It follows the style of the palaces built in its era. Like the Dolmabahce and the Beylerbeyi Palaces, it has a European architectural style. Although initially neglected by the Ottomans until the 16th century, Ortakoy became an important site in which all monotheistic religions existed with peace and harmony.

Bosphorus Bridge: The Bosphorus is a geological strait separating the European and the Asian parts of Istanbul. It is a difficult body of water to navigate due to its opposite currents and sharp twists and turns. Along the entire course of the Bosphorus you can see tea garden and cafes, restaurants, old wooden houses, the maiden's tower, mosques, palaces, the Rumeli fortress (build by the Turks in the 14th and 15th centuries) and also the Bosphorus University (Turkey's most important institute of higher education, where all the classes are conducted in English).

Beylerbeyi Palace: The Beylerbeyi palace was built between 1861-1865 by Sultan Abdulaziz and is located in the Asian side of Istanbul on the eastern shore of the Bosphorus. It was the Sultans' summer house. The palace was built in a luxurious and
neoclassic style. Sultan Abdulaziz loved ships. His passion for ships can be observed by the naval motif in the decorations and by many paintings of ships. Around the palace there was an area of 160,000 m2 including a hunting area, a zoo and a garden with different flora from all over the world.

Camlica Hill: The tea gardens at Camlica district are located on the Asian side of the city. Here again you will find a typical Turkish place. No alcohol is served, just tea, coffee and cakes. You will be able to see a splendid view of the Bosphorus, Marmara Sea and Golden Horn.
