A restaurant better known in Paris than Istanbul, the Antique Gallery Restaurant & Cafe is one of Sultanahmet’s best kept secrets.  Perhaps this is why it is one of the few restaurants in the area to attract Turks and foreigners.  Located just down the street from the Aya Sophia, the sunken entrance of the Antique Gallery will take you into another world.  As the name suggests, the decor consists of dark, rich woodwork and historic Turkish craftwork that owner Hakan has collected over the years.  This is perfectly complimented by bright walls and 153 beautiful colored glass lamps which hang from the ceiling.  Each is fashioned from old glassware (cups, vases, etc.) by a local craftsman.  Hakan hopes to have a total of 300 when the project is completed.  The atmosphere is simultaneously romantic, contemplative and moody.  Each evening there is traditional live Turkish music and once a week a belly dancer performs, all at no cover charge.  The food is as wonderful as the ambience.  The restaurant is known for its seafood, but offers a great variety of dishes including curry, kebab and tempura.  One of the more unusual house specialties is shrimp balls, delectable meatballs made from shrimp.   Make sure to leave room for dessert, as the sweets here will not disappoint.  The decadent antique chocolate consists of sumptuous chunks of frozen chocolate with dark chocolate and coconut shavings on top.  Suprisingly, all meals are reasonably priced and a full dinner can be had for around .
